Want to get places faster? The Focus Jarifa Speed can help. With speeds of up to 25 MPH motor assisted, the Jarifa Speed makes a car in city traffic seem sadly sluggish.* Featuring high quality components all around, including Avid hydraulic disc brakes, B & M front and rear lights, and SRAM Force drivetrain, the Focus Jariffa Speed is one impressive electric bike.
Highlights:
*Electric bikes with 20mph+ speeds require an M1 or M2 license. This bike can be made to comply with CA law which does not require a license.
We generally hate using cars as a point of comparison for electric bikes. There is hardly a similarity between a 150 MPH Ferrari and even our fastest electric bikes, no matter how neutered the car may be by speed restrictions, stop signs, and traffic. But sometimes a comparison can be useful, especially to the novice who has never had the pleasure of trying an electric bike. The Focus Jarifa Speed is a case in point. How do you get across thebenefits of a Panasonic mid-drive motor, or the quick handling of lightweight 26” rims, or the incredible stopping power of Avid Elixir hydraulic disc brakes? Well, we’ve succumbed to the car analogy and can often be heard comparing the Focus Jarifa Speed to a high end manual transmission sports car, a Ferrari if you will.
Why is this bike best understood as a quick coupe? Well, for one, there is the way it is powered, which works in a manner that would be familiar to someone accustomed to a manual transmission car. Like a car, you start in a low gear and work your way up as you gain speed. Since the motor runs through your transmission as opposed to applying power directly to the axle (like the OHM and Bionx) the gear you’re in really matters. The importance of gearing connects you much more to the road and the terrain, which means you are a much more active rider than on some of our other electric bikes.
So that is the one similarity to a sports car. The other similarity is speed: the Focus flies. As it comes from the manufacturer, the Panasonic motor on the Focus will assist you upwards of 28 MPH, making this the fastest bike we sell and requiring that you have or obtain an M1 classification on your license. We can gear the bike differently to keep the motor assisting within the legal limit of 20MPH, but if you like fast you are going to love this bike.
The last similarity between our Focus and a sports car is ergonomics. This bike is designed for quick handling and high speeds, and not for comfort per se. In a manner that would be familiar to anyone who has driven a BMW from years previous - “German’s do not do cup-holders” - the Focus is all about form following function. This is both good and bad: you have a bike that is sleek, powerful and nimble, but you also are going to be crouched over the front wheel for better control, gripping somewhat uncomfortable no-nonsense grips. The narrow stiff saddle is also meant for performance, not cruising. But this is a bicycle, and the beauty of a bicycle is customization: you can (and will) make this bike your own by swapping parts and adjusting components and The New Wheel can help. The best part is that we are offering the Focus Jarifa Speed at a great price. This bike was $4400 last year, but we have recently received preferential pricing on remaining stock and are now offering it at $3399, a $1000 discount. And of course, as with all of our bikes, the Focus Jarifa Speed is backed by a full 2 year warranty, includes lifetime service from The New Wheel and can be purchased with our outstanding 12 month 0% interest commuter financing program. So come in to the shop to learn more and take a test ride!

All new Focus bikes are inspected and setup by one of our experienced bicycle mechanics. We follow our comprehensive new bike setup checklist to make sure your bike is setup perfectly. Once your bike setup is complete, the checklist is signed off by the mechanic responsible for your bike and provided to you as part of your new owner packet.
Your bike comes standard with 6 months of complimentary tune-ups. To guarantee that your bicycle works great over its lifecycle, we ask that you bring it in for at least two tune-ups: one at 100 miles of riding and then again at 500 miles. We recommend purchasing a service membership with your bike to guarantee that it is serviced regularly. Ask us about our yearly membership packages to learn which one makes sense for your type of riding.
We also offer a 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance program for $40/year that will transport you and your bicycle up to 30 miles to a location of your choosing two times a year (be it our shop or another bike shop or your home).
Your new electric bike can be serviced by any qualified bicycle technician. The electric components of your bike are best serviced by The New Wheel as we have the equipment required to diagnose and fix any issue with your system.
Q: How does an electric bike work?
A: There are two types of electric bikes, one we call “first generation” ebikes, and the other “second generation.” First generation electric bikes are designed around a throttle (basically an on/off switch for the motor) or a cadence sensor (an on/off switch for the motor turned on when you begin to pedal) or both. Second generation electric bikes are designed around a torque sensor that measure how hard you are pedaling (how much pressure you put on the pedals) and then tells the motor to give power in proportion to your pedaling. Second generation electric bikes offer a far superior riding experience that is more smooth, variable, and safe, but are more expensive because the hardware is more sophisticated.
All of the electric bikes sold by The New Wheel are second generation bikes, that work by measuring pedal pressure. Some of our bikes also have the added benefit of a throttle for riding without pedaling.
Q: For whom was the Focus Jarifa Speed designed?
A: The Focus Jarifa Speed was designed for people who wish to increase their riding experience, and:
• find it difficult to ride uphill or against the wind
• want to ride faster and longer
• want to avoid traffic when traveling to work
• want to ride with a group and maintain their speed (without struggling at the back of the pack
Q: Will an assisted bicycle keep me in better shape than a conventional bicycle?
A: Yes. According to an Australian study conducted by the Institute of Transport Studies, the assistance provided by such a bicycle helps to maintain the rider’s heart rate in the aerobic zone.
Because you can be assisted when going uphill, you do not need to spend excessive energy, you feel less tired, and can therefore keep going in your aerobic zone. With a conventional bicycle, many people exceed their aerobic zone when riding uphill then feels completely drained.
Q: How many miles can one travel on a charge?
A: It all depends on terrain and how much stop and go traffic to be contended with. In our experience, the Focus Jarifa Speed can take a rider of around 160 pounds up to 35 miles over hilly San Francisco terrain. A larger battery can be purchased for the Volt that will extend its range.
Q: How does charging work?
A: Simply plug the charger supplied with your Focus Jarifa Speed into a wall socket. Then, unlock the battery from your bike, and place it on the charger. The indicator lights on your battery will slowly light up until the battery is full, at which point they will turn off.
Q: How long does it take to charge the battery?
A: A full charge from empty is achieve in just 2.5 hours.
Q: What is the typical lifespan of a battery?
A: The battery can last for a very long time, but its ability to hold a charge will be reduced to about 80% after 800 charge/recharge cycles. One charge/recharge cycle is a full cycle, meaning that if you only deplete half of the energy in the battery, and recharge it from there, that counts as only half a cycle.
If we conservatively figure that one charge cycle equals about 30 miles, you will probably not notice a reduced charge until about 15,000 miles. That’s a lot of biking!
Q: Can my electric bike be serviced by a bicycle mechanic?
A: Yes, definitely. Your Focus Jarifa Speed is at heart a bicycle, with standard bicycle components. The electric system itself is best serviced by The New Wheel.
Q: Can I ride in the rain?
A: Yes, you can use your BH Emotion Volt in the rain without any worries. All system elements are sealed and water resistant.
Q: What is the warranty?
A: All components of your Focus Jarifa Speed are covered by a 2 year limited warranty.
