All new Kettler bikes are inspected and setup by one of our experienced bicycle mechanics. We follow our comprehensive new bike setup checklist to make sure your bike is setup perfectly. Once your bike setup is complete, the checklist is signed off by the mechanic responsible for your bike and provided to you as part of your new owner packet.
Your bike comes standard with complimentary tune-ups for as long as you own it. We also offer a 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance program for $40/year that will transport you and your bicycle up to 30 miles to a location of your choosing two times a year (be it our shop or another bike shop or your home).
Your new electric bike can be serviced by any qualified bicycle technician. The electric components of your bike are best serviced by The New Wheel as we have the equipment required to diagnose and fix any issue with your system.
Q: How does an electric bike work?
A: There are two types of electric bikes, one we call “first generation” ebikes, and the other “second generation.” First generation electric bikes are designed around a throttle (basically an on/off switch for the motor) or a cadence sensor (an on/off switch for the motor turned on when you begin to pedal) or both. Second generation electric bikes are designed around a torque sensor that measures how hard you are pedaling (how much pressure you put on the pedals) and then tells the motor to give power in proportion to how hard you are pedaling. Second generation electric bikes offer a far superior riding experience that is more smooth, variable, and safe, but are more expensive because the hardware is more sophisticated.
All of the electric bikes sold by The New Wheel are second generation bikes, that work by measuring pedal pressure. Some of our bikes also have the added benefit of a throttle for riding without pedaling.
Q: For whom was the Kettler electric bike designed?
A: The Kettler electric bike was designed for people who wish to increase their riding experience, and:
• find it difficult to ride uphill or against the wind
• want to ride faster and longer
• want to avoid traffic when traveling to work
• want to ride with a group and maintain their speed (without struggling at the back of the pack
Q: Will an assisted bicycle keep me in better shape than a conventional bicycle?
A: Yes. According to an Australian study conducted by the Institute of Transport Studies, the assistance provided by such a bicycle helps to maintain the rider’s heart rate in the aerobic zone.
Because you can be assisted when going uphill, you do not need to spend excessive energy, you feel less tired, and can therefore keep going in your aerobic zone. With a conventional bicycle, many people exceed their aerobic zone when riding uphill then feels completely drained.
Q: How many miles can one travel on a charge?
A: It all depends on terrain and how much stop and go traffic to be contended with. In our experience, the Kettler can take a rider of around 160 pounds up to 35 miles over hilly San Francisco terrain.
Q: How does charging work?
A: Simply plug the step-down converter supplied with your Kettler into the wall and then plug the charger supplied with your Kettler into a wall socket. Then, unlock the battery from your bike, and place it on the charger. The indicator light on the charger will glow yellow as the battery is charged, and green when complete.
Q: How long does it take to charge the battery?
A: A full charge from empty is achieve in just 2.5 hours.
Q: What is the typical lifespan of a battery?
A: The battery can last for a very long time, but its ability to hold a charge will be reduced to about 80% after 800 charge/recharge cycles. One charge/recharge cycle is a full cycle, meaning that if you only deplete half of the energy in the battery, and recharge it from there, that counts as only half a cycle.
If we conservatively figure that one charge cycle equals about 30 miles, you will probably not notice a reduced charge until about 15,000 miles. That’s a lot of biking!
Q: Can my electric bike be serviced by a bicycle mechanic?
A: Yes, definitely. Your Kettler is at heart a bicycle, with standard bicycle components. The electric system itself is best serviced by The New Wheel.
Q: Can I ride in the rain?
A: Yes, you can use your Kettler in the rain without any worries. All system elements are sealed and water resistant.
Q: What is the warranty?
A: Your Kettler is covered under a 3-year limited warranty.
